Day 1 Arrival to Thessaloniki. Our bus and experienced guide will wait at the airport and drive us to the city of Kavala, which is reached after approximately 2 ½ hours drive. Kavala is a beautiful city, right on the sea shore. This is the place where the Apostle Paul disembarked and entered Europe for the first time. We will enjoy the view from the old castle above the city. Dinner and overnight at a central hotel in Kalava.
Day 2 Departure from Kalava to the river of Zygaktis where Paul baptized Lydia, the first Christian in Europe. Visit the excavations of Filippi with the market place, theatre, an octagonal church and of course the prison. We continue to Amfipolis with the wonderful Lion statue, guarding the Stimonas river. Via Apollonia we arrive late afternoon to Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece. Dinner at the hotel and the rest of the evening for leisure. We suggest a stroll along the promenade next to the sea…
Day 3 Thessaloniki is a modern city, build amphitheatrically down to the Thermaikos Gulf, but it is also an old city. Paul established a church here, as we know from the “Letters to the Thessalonians”. We are going to visit some of the interesting churches, having a look at the development of the architecture and decoration at Agia Sophia, Agios Demetrios and the Rotunda of Saint George. A walk through the narrow streets of Thessaloniki will end the tour. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 4 Leaving Thessaloniki and heading for Veria, where we will see the monument for the Apostle Paul and have a short walk around the Jewish quarter stretching down to the River of Tripotamos. We continue the trip to Vergina to visit the Royal Tombs of Philip II, the king of Macedonia and the father of Alexander the Great. The grave of Philip II is today one of the most modern museums in Greece, laying underground, just as it was discovered. In the afternoon we continue to Kalambaka, at the foot of the impressive rocks of Meteora. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5 The day begins with a visit to the sky tall rocks. As outstanding columns they rise in the middle of the landscape. In hundred of meters height we find the Byzantine monasteries. Six of them are still in use and inhabited today. In the 16.th century there were around 24 monasteries, but many of them has disappeared due to the vulnerable location. In the 1920’ties steps and hikes were made, making the monasteries more accessible and that lead to a religious rise and many monks and nuns returned to Meteora. In the afternoon we continue through mountains and valleys to Delphi. Dinner and overnight.
Day 6 Visit the centre of the ancient world – the “Omphalos” (Navel of Earth) – whose prestige extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hellenic World. On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, in a landscape of unparalleled beauty and majesty, lie the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo Pythios. Visit the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo and the museum containing such masterpieces of Ancient Greek sculpture as the bronze Charioteer and the famous athlete Aghias. After the visit, we drive to Ossios Loucas. The well kept monastery with the beautiful Byzantine mosaics. Athens is reached late in the afternoon. Dinner at a local restaurant in the old part of town Plaka. Overnight in Athens.
Day 7 The day starts with a city sightseeing in Athens. This tour gives you an opportunity to observe the striking contrasts that make Athens such a fascinating city. The guide takes you to see the centre of the city, Constitution Square (Syntagma), the House of Parliament, the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier and the National Library. Driving down Herod Atticus street, you will see the Evzones in their picturesque uniform and the Presidential Palace. On your way to the Acropolis you will see the Hadrian’s Arch, visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus and we will make a short stop at the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in 1896. On the Acropolis visit the architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and finally “the harmony between material and spirit”, the monument that “puts order in mind”, the Parthenon. Rest of the day for leisure. Overnight in Athens.
Day 8 We are going to visit Ancient Corinth today. After approximately one hour drive, we reach the Corinth Canal. We make a stop at the river bank – at Istmia – and study the old bridge, which sinks into the bottom of the canal, every time a ship is crossing… The 6 km. long canal, which was consecrated in 1893, makes the journey between Patras and Athens 200 nautical miles shorter and the seafarers save a daytrip round Peloponnese, going through the canal. Drive on and visit the Ancient Town of Corinth where the Apostle Paul lived and preached for two years. The remains of the city, which include the Agora (market palace) and Apollo’s Temple (6th century B.C.) clearly shows how rich and important Corinth was in Ancient Times. A short stop at the site of the Ancient Port of Cehries, where Paul disembarked, will continue the visit. Return to Athens in the afternoon.
Day 9 Morning hours for leisure, before we leave from the hotel to the airport for the return flight.
Visit Greece in a different way… Follow the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul.
This specific tour will follow the footsteps of Apostle Paul from the moment he arrived in Europe, in Neapolis at Kavala in the northern part of Greece. We will listen to the story of his life and how he found the first Christian churches in Europe. We will travel to Filippi, to Amfipolis, Thessaloniki, Veria, Athens and Corinth. Along the way we will visit the Royal Tombs in Vergina, the monasteries in Meteora, Delphi, Ossios Loucas and many other interesting places. Beyond the images of small islands, sun and blue sea, Greece has much more to offer its visitor… Beautiful nature and the hearth of our western culture; poetry, theatre, philosophy and architecture, just to mention some… This trip gives you the opportunity to experience another side of Greece. We welcome you to an adventure you will never forget!
